Taktus Duo

  • Interaction School 228 Germain Street Saint John, NB, E2L 2G4 Canada (map)

Taktus, Toronto’s groove-based marimba duo, was founded by percussionists Greg Harrison and Jonny Smith. Taktus seeks to create music that crosses borders between genres and is relevant to contemporary audiences. In their original arrangements, the duo has reenvisioned works of minimalism and electroacoustic music on the marimba. In the summer of 2015, Taktus released their debut album, Glass Houses for Marimba, on the Canadian Music Centre’s record label, Centrediscs. It has received critical acclaim by reviewers from Wholenote Magazine, Scene Magazine, and I Care If You Listen. The album also made CBC’s list of Top 10 Canadian Classical Music Albums of 2015. Following the launch of their album, Taktus were guest performers at FUZE Fest in Fredericton as part of the New Brunswick Summer Music Festival and at the “Intersections” new music festival in Toronto. In 2016, Taktus has premiered a number of new arrangements of works by Philip Glass and Aphex Twin. They presented a concert in the Toronto Summer Music Garden series on September 1st, which launched their current tour.
