Unsilent Night is a free outdoor participatory sound sculpture of many individual parts, recorded on cassettes, CDs and mp3s, which are played through a roving swarm of boomboxes carried through city streets every December. People bring their portable speakers or boomboxes and drift peacefully through a cloud of sound which is different from every listener’s perspective. Since 1992, this 45-minute work has grown into a worldwide annual communal event that has become an essential part of many winter holiday celebrations.
Even if folks don’t have a boombox or little Bluetooth speakers, we have lots and you can hook up your iPod or phone, all are welcome to come along and enjoy the piece!
Participants will meet at The Interaction School for Performing Arts 228 Germain St. in Uptown Saint John on Friday, December 18 at 7pm to start the parade. Everyone is encouraged to visit unsilentnight.com to look for the free mp3s, free iPhone or Android apps.
